From a Humble Beginning to a Permanent Home:

The Journey of the Islamic Society of Carroll County 🤲

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Every great community is built not just with bricks and mortar, but with faith, sacrifice, and the unwavering determination of a few sincere hearts. The story of the Islamic Society of Carroll County (ISCC) is exactly that—a beautiful testament to what can be achieved when we put our trust in Allah and come together for His sake.

The Seed of Faith (Circa 2000)

Around the year 2000, a handful of Muslim families in Westminster, MD, were driven by a fundamental need: a place to fulfill their sacred obligation of the five daily prayers and the weekly Jummah congregation. With limited local families and a few dedicated professionals practicing in the area, the idea of a "MUSALLA"—a humble space for prayer—was born.

In a powerful first act of generosity, a compassionate doctor offered his own office for this blessed purpose. It was there, in that simple space, that the very first Friday prayers were held. The spirit of community, however, could not be contained. The congregation quickly outgrew the office, signaling that Allah had greater plans for this small group of believers.

A Testament to Interfaith Harmony

The search for a larger space led the community to a local hotel, renting a hall that soon proved temporary. But it was in this moment of uncertainty that a beautiful chapter of interfaith friendship began to unfold.

Another kind-hearted doctor reached out to a patient and friend from the Brethren Church of Westminster. Moved by this bond of friendship, the church leadership extended an incredible hand of goodwill, offering their basement as a place for the Muslims to pray.

For years, the basement of the Brethren Church became a second home. It was more than just a space; it was the foundation for a profound and lasting relationship. The Muslim community was never charged rent, despite their persistent offers. Instead, this shared space blossomed into a bridge of understanding, giving rise to interfaith dinners and social gatherings that enriched both communities. It was a shining example of the Quranic call to "come to a common word" and build bridges of compassion.

A Dream Fulfilled (2006)

With faith as their guide and years of saving, the community's patience was rewarded. In 2006, the Islamic Society of Carroll County achieved a monumental milestone: the purchase of its very own property just outside Westminster city limits. For the first time, the Muslims of Carroll County had a permanent place to call their own.

The journey, however, was not over. The newly formed board worked tirelessly, navigating county requirements to gain official approval as a place of worship. After making the necessary improvements, their efforts were crowned with success. Alhamdulillah, the space was legally recognized, solidifying ISCC’s presence for generations to come.
